Fort Lancaster, Texas

Fort Lancaster

The San Antonio-El Paso Road crossed through these mountains. In order to get down these mountains they lead the horses and mules down single file and often blind-folded. To get the wagons down they used ropes and levered them down the mountain sides.

Once down the travelers found water and rest in the security of Fort Lancaster before continuing on westward.

Ruins of Fort Lancaster State Historic Site

No pictures exist of the original Fort Lancaster. The post was abandoned in 1873 or 1874 and much of its material was used to build the buildings in the nearby town of Sheffield.

Today the park visitor center offers exhibits on history, natural history, and archaeology; nature study on a nature trail; historic ruins; and picnicking. The bookstore offers books on the history of Texas and its forts.
