Mammoth Hot Spring Terraces
Yellowstone National Park

These step terraces are formed from calcium and bicarbonate dropped from the boiling water as it bubbles from the earth and cools. The Travertine is bright white weathering to grey. The brown in soil contaminants. Unlike the ones in Turkey at Permukale these seem alive and are constantly changing shape and color as springs dry up and new activity forms.

Sulfur Fumes
Yellowstone National Park

The National Park Service has built wooden walkways that span the hot pools of boiling mud. Deep pockets of boiling water steam and fill the air with heat. Sulphur fumes sometimes fill the air. As the hot water boils up it runs off leaving behind evidence of chemicals. Amazingly algae and grasses survive in this as do some microscopic animals.

Yellowstone National Park

Deep pools of hot, steaming water are so clear that you can look down and see their sides, but seldom their bottoms. Minerals color the waters and give them their names. The colors are beautiful -- Jade, Emerald, Opalescent, Black Sand, Rainbow, Sunset, and Sapphire.

Old Faithful

Old Faithful Geyser
Yellowstone National Park

Probably named for the fact that its eruptions are relatively closely spaced, predictable, and large, Old Faithful Geyser is a spectacle enjoyed by millions every year. With an error of 10 minutes, Old Faithful will erupt every 65 minutes if the eruption lasts less than 2.5 minutes or in 92 minutes if the eruption is longer. It is reliably predictable because it is not connected to any other thermal activities of the Upper Geyser Basin in Yellowstone.

Geyser Field
Yellowstone National Park

A Geyser Field at night is both mysterious and powerful. It is no wonder that the native American tribes considered Yellowstone to be a sacred place. Here as you walk you feel the power and strength of nature and Mother Earth. You also sense the mystic and unknown powers that rumble beneath your steps.
