Mayan Xunantunich

The Maya civilization in Belize dates back to 1500 BC. Spanish conquistadors declared it a Spanish colony but chose not to settle it because there was no gold and the Maya would fight them.

In 1836, after Central America was freed from Spanish rule, the British claimed the region and named it British Honduras. In 1964 Belize became an independent country.
