Lanzarote is the northernmost of the seven main Canary islands. The
islands are located 70 miles from the African coast.
Lanzarote is Volcanic in origin. Eruptions in the 18th and 19th
Centuries have left Lanzarote appearing as though it is from another
world. So lunar does it appear that parts
of 'Planet of the Apes' were shot here. Lanzarote has fertile lava-rich
soil that is perfect for growing vegetables and wines.
Cesar Manrique's unique native art has made Lanzarote a major art destination.
He utilizes the volcanic landscape to create modern designs. His relationship
with nature is reflected in the effect he has had on local housing discouraging
the high rises that dote other islands. To the right is the House of Cesar Manrique.
