Capital of Estonia

Tallinn is a gem of Northern Europe. The city lies on the southern coast of the Gulf of Finland.

At the historical heart of the city is the hill of Toompea, covered in cobbled streets and filled with medieval houses and alleyways. The lower town spreads out from the foot of the hill, still protected by the remnants of a city wall. Around the city wall is a series of well-maintained green parks, great for strolling.

The old town is well preserved and was placed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1997.

Freedom Square
Tallinn, Estonia

Some streets resemble the fashionable shopping streets of Zürich or Geneva while the new town which circles old town outside the city walls is built in Soviet concrete style.

Freedom Square is at the center of old town.

View from Hotel Viru
Tallinn, Estonia

This sunset picture was taken through the window of my hotel room in the Hotel Viru.

The Hotel Viru is the former Intourist hotel and a notorious den of Cold War intrigue.

Every room was tapped and monitored by the KGB during the Cold War!.
