Labrador and Newfoundland

The separate entities of Labrador and Newfoundland joined together to form one Canadian province and joined Canada in 1949.

Labrador is on the mainland bordered on the west by the Province of Quebec. Newfoundland is an island offshore to the south and east.

The land is mostly barren and the people who live here are strong and know how to handle the elements that are so important in their lives.

There are a number of communities in Labrador. Happy Valley-Goose Bay, North West River, Mud Lake and Sheshatshiu are some of the more familiar names.

If you wish to drive along the coast to Newfoundland on the Wilderness Drive -- which is very scenic, to ensure your safety, the provincial government has satellite telephones for loan. Now that's rural.
